International Owl Day
This Tuesday, August 4, International Owl Awareness Day puts the spotlight on birds that have fascinated humanity for millennia. Present on every continent except Antarctica, owls have developed surprising adaptations: frontal eyes fixed in their sockets, facial discs that function as satellite dishes, and soft-edged feathers that allow them to fly in absolute silence.
Spain is one of the best places in Europe to observe them. The tawny owl, the European owl and the barn owl inhabit forests, olive groves and village bell towers; but the real king is the eagle owl (Bubo bubo), the largest owl on the continent, which nests in rocks of the Peninsula and the Canary Islands. To know them is to learn to look at the world in a different way.
Este martes, 4 de agosto, el Día Internacional de la Concienciación sobre los Búhos pone el foco en unas aves que llevan milenios fascinando a la humanidad. Presentes en todos los continentes salvo la Antártida, los búhos han desarrollado adaptaciones sorprendentes: ojos frontales fijos en sus cuencas, discos faciales que funcionan como antenas parabólicas y plumas de bordes suaves que les permiten volar en silencio absoluto.
España es uno de los mejores lugares de Europa para observarlos. El cárabo, el mochuelo europeo y la lechuza común habitan bosques, olivares y campanarios de pueblo; pero el verdadero rey es el búho real (Bubo bubo), el mayor búho del continente, que anida en roquedos de la Península y las Islas Canarias. Conocerlos es aprender a mirar el mundo de otra manera.
Giornata Internazionale del Gufo
Questo martedì 4 agosto, la Giornata Internazionale della Consapevolezza dei Gufi metterà in luce gli uccelli che affascinano l'umanità per millenni. Presenti su ogni continente tranne l'Antartide, i gufi hanno sviluppato adattamenti sorprendenti: occhi frontali fissi nelle orbite, dischi facciali che fungono da parabole satellitari e piume dai bordi morbidi che permettono loro di volare in assoluto silenzio.
La Spagna è uno dei posti migliori d'Europa per osservarli. Il gufo fulvo, il gufo europeo e il barbagianni abitano foreste, uliveti e campanili di villaggio; ma il vero re è il gufo reale (Bubo bubo), il gufo più grande del continente, che nidifica tra le rocce della Penisola e delle Isole Canarie. Conoscerli significa imparare a guardare il mondo in modo diverso.
