Eastbourne Pier, East Sussex, England

England Nov 27, 2025

When it comes to coastal icons, Eastbourne Pier, East Sussex, on the south coast of England, not only makes waves, but has been riding them for more than 150 years. Opened in 1870, this Victorian gem has survived storms, fires, and even wars. Initially, it served as a docking point for steamships, but over time, it became a place of strolling, leisure, and culture.

A heavy storm in 1877 destroyed half of the pier facing the land, which was then rebuilt at a higher level on flexible pilings to withstand severe weather better. During World War II, sections of the deck were removed to install machine guns in coastal defense. A fire in 2014 damaged part of the structure, but it was restored and reopened, regaining its charm and the murmur of seagulls.

Throughout its history, the pier has hosted events such as the Airbourne air festival and has been featured in series such as Poirot and Art Attack. Today, it offers a variety of attractions, from cafes to shops and panoramic views of the English Channel.
