Gabit Keni Beach near Ankola in the Indian state of Karnataka is one of those discreet stops in the Arabian Sea where life follows the rhythm of boats: they leave before dawn and return with the day's catch. The sandy area owes its name to the Gabit, a fishing community on the Konkan coast.
There is more around it than meets the eye. This coastal strip was for centuries a gateway for pepper and areca nuts, and its fortresses are still visited, such as the Mirjan fort, built in the sixteenth century. Ankola also boasts two products that are very much its own: cashew nuts and ishaad mangoes.
At dusk, with the nets laid and the sky dyed orange, it is understandable why those who arrive here are in no hurry to leave.

El arenal debe su nombre a los gabit, comunidad pesquera de la costa de Konkan.
Alrededor hay más de lo que parece. Esta franja litoral fue durante siglos una puerta de salida de la pimienta y la nuez de areca, y todavía se visitan sus fortalezas, como el fuerte de Mirjan, levantado en el siglo XVI. Ankola presume además de dos productos muy suyos: el anacardo y el mango ishaad.
Al atardecer, con las redes tendidas y el cielo tiñéndose de naranja, se entiende por qué quien llega hasta aquí no tiene ninguna prisa por marcharse.
