In the dusty shelves of the family library, I found a text published in 1834, written by my famous ancestor Tommaso Grossi. It was a great success in its time and has been translated into several languages, including English. In Italy, a television serial adaptation was also produced in 1941, later re‑edited and broadcast again in the 1960s, which I had the pleasure of seeing live.
The English text I am publishing comes from a precious 1907 edition, part of the seventeen‑volume series THE LITERATURE OF ITALY. The introduction, autographed, is by Maurice Francis Egan.
From Wikipedia: Maurice Francis Egan (May 24, 1852 – January 15, 1924) was an American writer and diplomat. He was a prolific author and had a long and successful career as a Catholic journalist, literary critic, and novelist. He was a professor of English at two universities and served as United States Minister in Copenhagen.
I also found an earlier edition from 1880, published by GEORGE BELL AND SONS, YORK STREET, COVENT GARDEN, LONDON.
Although less valuable, its handwritten annotations by an early reader offer an intriguing historical glimpse.
Along with many other collections, the book is preserved in the holdings of Oxford University and in the Library of Congress (U.S.A.), in its original Italian language.
The novel takes place between Lake Como and Milan in the fourteenth century, where the nobleman and military leader Marco Visconti meets Countess Beatrice del Balzo, daughter of a woman he had loved in his youth. Beyond the romantic story between the two, the novel explores the character and temperament of the people of that era, immersing the reader in a historical dimension where personal and civic values—largely forgotten today—are brought to light. As the distinguished author of the introduction emphasizes, these values, though rooted in past centuries, still give the story a relevance and resonance that I consider contemporary.
For this reason, I decided to offer my readers the publication of the Introduction and, later, of the first chapter—now in English, and then in the Italian edition revised and corrected by me, as well as in the Spanish version. The Italian edition will also be accompanied by the television episodes. Together, these materials provide a vivid image of fourteenth‑century society.
Considering the editing and transcription work that this project requires, the following chapters of the story will be reserved for paying subscribers.
Entre los polvorientos estantes de la biblioteca familiar encontré un texto publicado en 1834, escrito por mi célebre antepasado Tommaso Grossi. Fue un gran éxito en su época y ha sido traducido a varios idiomas, incluido el inglés. En Italia, en 1941 se produjo también una versión televisiva en forma de serie, que más tarde fue remontada y retransmitida en los años sesenta, y que tuve el placer de ver en directo.
La novela se desarrolla entre el Lago de Como y Milán en el siglo XIV, donde el noble y comandante militar Marco Visconti conoce a la condesa Beatrice del Balzo, hija de una mujer a la que él había amado en su juventud. Además de la historia romántica entre ambos, la obra explora el carácter y el temperamento de las gentes de aquella época, sumergiendo al lector en una dimensión histórica en la que salen a la luz valores personales y cívicos —hoy en gran parte olvidados—. Como subraya el ilustre autor de la introducción, estos valores, aunque arraigados en siglos pasados, confieren a la historia una vigencia y una resonancia que considero plenamente actuales.
Por este motivo decidí ofrecer a mis lectores la publicación de la Introducción y, posteriormente, del primer capítulo —ahora en inglés, luego en la edición italiana revisada y corregida por mí, así como en la versión española—. La edición italiana irá acompañada también de los episodios televisivos. En conjunto, estos materiales ofrecen una imagen vívida de la sociedad del siglo XIV.
Teniendo en cuenta el trabajo de edición y transcripción que este proyecto requiere, los capítulos siguientes de la historia estarán reservados a los suscriptores de pago.
Tra gli scaffali polverosi della biblioteca di famiglia, trovai un testo pubblicato nel 1834, scritto dal mio famoso antenato Tommaso Grossi. Fu un grande successo nel suo tempo ed è stato tradotto in diverse lingue, incluso l'inglese. In Italia, nel 1941 fu prodotta anche una versione televisiva in serie adattata, poi rimontata e trasmessa nuovamente negli anni '60, che ebbi il piacere di vedere dal vivo.
Il romanzo si svolge tra il Lago di Como e Milano nel XIV secolo, dove il nobile e comandante militare Marco Visconti incontra la contessa Beatrice del Balzo, figlia di una donna che aveva amato in gioventù. Oltre alla storia romantica tra i due, il romanzo esplora il carattere e il temperamento delle persone di quell'epoca, immergendo il lettore in una dimensione storica in cui vengono portati alla luce valori personali e civici—oggi in gran parte dimenticati. Come sottolinea l'autore illustre dell'introduzione, questi valori, pur affondando le radici nei secoli passati, conferiscono comunque alla storia una rilevanza e una risonanza che considero contemporanea.
Per questo motivo, decisi di offrire ai miei lettori la pubblicazione dell'Introduzione e, successivamente, del primo capitolo—ora in inglese, poi nell'edizione italiana rivista e corretta da me, così come nella versione spagnola. L'edizione italiana sarà accompagnata anche dagli episodi televisivi. Insieme, questi materiali forniscono un'immagine vivida della società del XIV secolo.
Considerando il lavoro di editing e trascrizione che questo progetto richiede, i capitoli successivi della storia saranno riservati agli abbonati paganti.
NOTE: I cannot provide a precise schedule for the publications, given the work involved, but tomorrow I will publish the introduction in English and possibly the first chapter. The following chapters will appear weekly, together with the versions in the original language and the translations into Castilian.

Gli iscritti paganti potranno comunque rivedere tutto in qualsiasi momento, una volta pubblicato.
