Eiffel Tower at sunset, Paris, France
The Eiffel Tower stands out at sunset over Paris (France), although its history began with much worse press: it was erected as the gateway to the Universal Exhibition of 1889, which celebrated the centenary of the French Revolution, and a large part of the Parisian intelligentsia branded it an iron eyesore.
With its initial 300 meters it became the tallest construction in the world, a title it held until 1930. During the exhibition, millions of visitors climbed to see the city from a height hitherto unimaginable, and the controversy dissolved on its own.
In Spain there was a close mark: in 1877 Gustave Eiffel's company signed the bridge of the Peixateries Velles de Girona, that red frame over the Onyar that today is one of the postcards of the city. Twelve years before the tower, he was already rehearsing with iron.
