Wimbachklamm Gorge

Wimbachklamm Gorge, Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden, Bavaria, Germany

Oct 13, 2025

Steep rocky gorges, turbulent waters and a landscape that looks like a painting: the Wimbachklamm near Ramsau in the Berchtesgaden National Park is one of the most impressive gorges in Bavaria, Germany. The Wimbach runs for about 200 meters between narrow rock formations, falling into small waterfalls and creating surprising patterns in the stone over time. The brightly colored layers of rock tell geological stories of thousands of years.

Safe wooden walkways allow you to walk through the gorge and enjoy its grandeur. At the end, the Wimbach valley opens up between the Watzmann and Hochkalter mountains, an ideal starting point for hiking trails. Open to the public since 1847, it continues to amaze visitors of all ages with its natural beauty.

Spring is especially spectacular: the thaw increases the flow of the river and transforms the gorge into a spectacle of strength and movement. Interestingly, similar gorges also exist in Spain, such as the Gaitanes gorge in Malaga, which show the geological diversity of the continent. A trip to the Wimbachklamm is a journey back in time that connects with the purest nature.
