Two polar bear cubs cross the snow in Svalbard, the Norwegian archipelago of glaciers and frozen fjords where the Arctic is unadorned. They were born in a burrow dug in the snow, blind and weighing just over half a kilo, and did not go outside until spring.

Their fights and chases seem like games, and they are, but they also work as training: this is how they learn to hunt and measure forces in one of the most demanding environments on the planet. The Barents Sea region is home to about 3,000 polar bears, one of the largest concentrations in the world, and is also one of the fastest-warming areas.

Its closest relative is the brown bear, the same one that survives in the Cantabrian Mountains and in the Pyrenees. Two cousins and two worlds: one of beech forests, the other of drifting ice.
