In Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia, water seems to be everywhere. Sixteen tiered lakes are linked by waterfalls, streams, and waterfalls that cut through forest-covered limestone canyons, and their color changes from emerald green to deep blue according to minerals, light, and reflections. Declared in 1949, it is the oldest and largest national park in the country.

Its great uniqueness is the tuff barriers: natural dams that are formed when water, loaded with calcium carbonate, deposits it century after century. They continue to grow, so waterfalls and lakes are slowly transformed. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1979.

In Spain there is something similar in the Ruidera lagoons, staggered and separated by travertine barriers; the Junta de Castilla-La Mancha points to the Croatian karst as its only parallel.

Continuano a crescere, così cascate e laghi vengono trasformati poco a poco.
