Twice a day, the sea retreats, exposing vast expanses of sand before returning: the difference between high and low tide can reach 14 meters, one of the most extreme in the world. For centuries, pilgrims calibrated their journeys to the rhythm of those waters or risk being trapped. According to legend, the archangel St. Michael appeared to a bishop in the year 708, commissioning him to build a sanctuary. The place became one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in Europe and, during the Hundred Years' War, withstood repeated English sieges without falling. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most visited monuments in France.
