International Snow Leopard Day
Help them survive on the rocky.
Have you ever tried to spot a snow leopard in its natural habitat? It is called the "ghost of the mountains" for a reason: it is easier to find its tracks than the feline itself. Every October 23, the species receives special attention on International Snow Leopard Day, a time to raise awareness about its protection and that of its rugged home.
These cats inhabit high-altitude areas in 12 Asian countries, from Afghanistan to China. Their thick fur and long tail help them survive on rocky, icy terrain. However, even these stealthy predators face threats such as poaching, habitat loss, and climate change. With fewer than 7,000 specimens in the wild, their conservation is essential.
Saving the snow leopard also protects entire ecosystems and the water sources of millions of people. From Spain, we can appreciate the importance of key species in our own ecosystems, such as its distant relative, the Iberian lynx, whose protection helps maintain the natural balance and biodiversity.
