Designed by Renzo Piano and inaugurated in 1998, its curved and elongated structures evoke the traditional huts of the Kanak people, although built with state-of-the-art materials and techniques. Trails that connect spaces of art, research and performance weave a story in which culture, land and community are inseparable. Every August 9, the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples – proclaimed by the UN in 1994 – recalls that more than 476 million indigenous people today hold thousands of cultures and most of the approximately 7,000 languages that exist on the planet. Their knowledge remains key to protecting ecosystems, transmitting languages and defining identities in a world in constant transformation.
