Grossglockner High Alpine Road

Oct 15, 2025

An experience that provides mountains of amazement!

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road, which proceeds from the Salzburg town of Fusch on the Grossglockner Road to Heiligenblut am Grossglockner on the Carinthian side, is one of the best-known landmarks in Austria and is regarded as one of the loveliest excursion and panoramic roads in the world. In any case, it is one of the three most visited excursion destinations in Austria! Most of this high Alpine road, which spans 48 kilometres, blends almost seamlessly into the mountains, with every twist and turn leading straight into the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park. Right up to Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe, to Austria’s highest mountain, the Grossglockner and the Pasterze Glacier, the biggest glacier that is still in existence in the East Alps. Majestic mountain summits, glaciers, lush valleys and woodlands – a sight that provides mountains of amazement!

An extra special excursion destination!

Along with numerous phenomenal viewing points, many free exhibitions, and exciting experience worlds along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, since 2015 this conservation-protected construction has been the starting point for a very special natural experience! It is here that you really get to experience the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park and the unique features of Austria's highest mountain.

Enjoy nature

As the operating company of a high Alpine road that proceeds through Austria’s most significant National Park, GROHAG, which operates this and other Austrian experience roads and attractions, is working in an area of conflict between nature, technology and tourism.

Paths to protecting nature & sustainability

However, through the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, many people have the opportunity to see and experience with their own eyes just what there is to protect. Measures that nurture and protect the environment are part of daily life at GROHAG. From innovative waste separation systems to expanding E-mobility to ecological mowing, all are part of their endeavours to be as sustainable as possible, in every respect.

Our ticket tip: Purchase your day ticket online and enjoy a 10 per cent discount on souvenirs, food and drink at all Grossglockner shops on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road!

Austria’s most beautiful panoramic road in numbers

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is 48 kilometres in length. Over that distance, there are 36 twists and turns to tackle up and downhill – right up to the Hochtor at 2504 metres altitude. The highest drivable point is actually even higher: the Edelweiss Spitze at 2571 metres, via an access road. From here you get to enjoy a breathtaking view of over 30 three-thousand metre mountains – and to the Grossglockner too, which, at 3798 metres, is Austria’s highest mountain! And here’s another exciting number – it is the only high Alpine road in Austria to cross four vegetation levels from the valley to the highest point – from montane level to subalpine level, continuing through the treeless Alpine level up to the glaciers and the highest summits in subnival and nival levels. And: with just 1 1-day ticket, you can even visit all 15 exhibitions, 7 themed hiking paths and various play areas free of charge.1-day1 day ticket, you can even visit all 15 exhibitions, seven, themed hiking paths and various play areas free of charge

Starting point for exceptional adventures in nature

However, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road provides far more than just fun driving. Every few metres, there are really special natural experiences. For instance, numerous exciting themed and panoramic paths, as well as an extensive hiking path network, start here, where there are lots of cosy inns and traditional Alpine lodges right next to the road. At every turn, you encounter rare plants and animals. Such as the Grossglockner High Alpine Road ‘High Five’ – the ibex, golden eagle, marmot, Apollo butterfly and the Alpine bumblebee.
