This wetland, declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, is one of the most important refuges in Europe for this species. Up to 145 centimeters tall and weighing about four kilograms, they are the largest wading bird in Europe, although their real spectacle comes when they spread their wings: a contrast of bright red and black that disappears as soon as they land again. Their diet in the Delta is based on brine shrimp and small crustaceans. That same pigment they ingest is responsible for their pink plumage.
