At the bottom of Komodo National Park (Indonesia), a decorating crab takes refuge on a sea feather, that soft coral that anchors itself to the sediment and unfolds like a fan. The strategy is simple and brilliant: the feather attracts attention and the crab disappears.

These crabs are disguised in a literal way. They attach algae, sponges, and hydrozoans to the hooked hairs that cover their shell, and the resulting silhouette is lost in the tangle. The park, created in 1980 to protect the Komodo dragon, also turned out to be one of the great marine showcases on the planet, thanks to the strong currents that circulate between the Pacific and the Indian Ocean.

In Spain we know another decorator well: the spider crab, from the Majid family, is placed seaweed and pieces of shell on the shell for the same reason.
