Coral reef surrounding Monuriki Island, Mamanuca Islands, Fiji
Some dates in history have a double meaning, and October 10 in Fiji is one of them. On that day, in 1874, the islands became a British colony. Exactly 96 years later, in 1970, the exact date marked the beginning of its independence and the raising of the national flag. Since then, Fiji Day has been celebrated in a spirit that combines reflection and joy.

The day begins with official ceremonies and speeches, followed by school and community activities. The streets are filled with parades, the villages celebrate traditional dances such as the meke, and the rugby fields become authentic meeting points. Families share typical dishes such as lovo, cooked underground, and kokoda, made with fish marinated in citrus fruits.
The spirit of freedom is also reflected in unique places, such as the island of Monuriki, which served as the setting for the film Castaway. Although uninhabited, its coral reefs protect the island from storms and are home to numerous marine species. For Spanish travelers, Fiji is synonymous with paradise: a destination famous for its white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and reefs full of life, perfect for relaxing and being surprised.
