The Brooklyn Bridge in New York is not just a connection between two shores: it is a monument to nineteenth-century engineering and human tenacity. Inaugurated in 1883 after fourteen years of work, it was the first suspension bridge made of steel cables in the world. Its construction took an unexpected turn: when designer John A. Roebling passed away and his son Washington became incapacitated, it was his wife Emily Warren Roebling who learned engineering to oversee the completion of the project.

In 1884, businessman P.T. Barnum crossed the bridge with twenty-one elephants and seventeen camels to prove his solidity. Under its towers, hidden vaults stored wine and champagne before becoming atomic shelters during the Cold War; In 2006, forgotten emergency supplies were rediscovered there. Today, peregrine falcons nest atop its stone towers. There are bridges that do not age.
