Cloistered nuns needed to cross the street to get from one building to another without being seen from the outside, and this covered bridge was the answer. Privacy, not spectacle, created one of the most photographed colonial monuments in Central America. Irony has a good memory. The city that hosts it has been navigating between greatness and rupture for centuries. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, Antigua treasures its colonial fabric while bearing the scars of the earthquakes that have repeatedly shaken it, including the devastating earthquake of 1773 that forced the capital to be moved to the site of present-day Guatemala City. Its baroque style drinks directly from the religious architecture that Spain exported during the colonial period, the same that can be admired today in the convents of the historic center of cities such as Toledo or Salamanca.
